While cooking dinner last night, one of the new housemates who is from China started chatting.
One of his first questions were:
Immediately my heart felt for him, imagine if a person like him from China who is doing his PhD does not know about Islam, then isn't it our duty to tell him about it? In reply:
" You must be Tao right? I saw your message on facebook. You came here in January?"
"Yes, the girls who cover their hair are Muslims. They practice Islam, it is the religion. Maybe in China you don't see many covering their heads?"
"I see, things must be new to you here! We cover our hair because it is one of the most beautiful parts of our bodies,we also do not want to attract unnecessary attention to ourselves."
"Yes, there are many muslims here and I suppose you can say that. It is important to see the difference between culture and religion, so sometimes you may see different ways of covering or clothing."
"No, not really, but you can say that most of them who do so come from the middle east."
"I am from Malaysia, it is in the south east asia region, actually, if you know Indonesia, it has the largest population of Muslims in the world."
"We have about 80% muslims in Malaysia and most of the muslim ladies from there wear like me, without covering the face."
"Ok, bye."
How about that? I hope it was clear enough for a first-timer who wants to know more about Islam. Allah knows best!!
One of his first questions were:
"Why do you cover your hair? I see many girls in university also covering their heads, is this a style or cultural or something or is it to do with religion? They call this Muslim?" said he very earnestly too.

"No, we don't see many covering their heads where I come from, I study in Hong Kong and I am on an exchange programme here untill July. But why do they cover their heads?"
"I see, things must be new to you here! We cover our hair because it is one of the most beautiful parts of our bodies,we also do not want to attract unnecessary attention to ourselves."
"Ok, that is why I noticed here there are many muslims. I saw many wearing black dresses and covering their faces too, so they must be very beautiful of they cover their faces?"
"Yes, there are many muslims here and I suppose you can say that. It is important to see the difference between culture and religion, so sometimes you may see different ways of covering or clothing."
"So, those who cover their faces are practicing their cultures?"
"No, not really, but you can say that most of them who do so come from the middle east."
"Oh, I thought Muslims are from the Middle east only? and you are from...?
"I am from Malaysia, it is in the south east asia region, actually, if you know Indonesia, it has the largest population of Muslims in the world."
"Oh really? and how about Malaysia?"
"We have about 80% muslims in Malaysia and most of the muslim ladies from there wear like me, without covering the face."
"Ok, so now I know. Nice chatting to you, see you later."
"Ok, bye."
How about that? I hope it was clear enough for a first-timer who wants to know more about Islam. Allah knows best!!
