Give from your right hand that your left does not know

Last weekend we visited a low cost community apartment colony at Section 25. Never knew it existed. The head of association there says there are 460 units and 60% are inhabited by home owners while 40% are tenants. Each unit is 650sq ft. Very tiny. With 3 bedrooms. 5 stories high.

The 2 families we visited there were stricken with kidney problems requiring dialysis every 4 h and the other stroke causing semi paralysis in half the body, both head of families, each with 3 children. It was humbling yet bewildering. How do they survive. With much difficulty… really. The women are the breadwinners. How do we help? Long term?

Apparently the zakat council stopped providing financial assistance to pay rent and some subsidy in groceries since 2020. Yet you see the smile in the faces. In my mind, help comes in many forms and challenges in many forms. Who are we to question why but as much as we can we should give from what sustenance we have in kind, cash or service.
