Eid ul Fitr 1445h - China

Eid morning started at 5am. The alarm went off and I woke the man up. Then the kids, one by one. Into the kitchen I went to get the chai started. Heated the koftas, nihari and roti for breakfast.

Got ready while the milk for sheer was heating on the induction hob, put on some make up and lip stick finally sunblock then back to kitchen to add badam, kaju and coconut to the milk. Ushered kids and the man to sit for breakfast. The clock struct 6.30am. Rush rush. Everyone got ready into their new eid clothes. Rushed through chai and off we went to catch the cab to the masjid.

Reached masjid by 7.30am. Found out solat will begin at 8.20am and kids were not even allowed in the vicinity of the masjid. So… had to find a nearby place to warm up while waiting for the man to finish his prayers. The temperature was 10 deg Celsius outside, slowly creeping up to 12. Texted Eid wishes to friends while waiting at a nearby spa. Wished I had just stayed at home.

The idea of being a Muslim in China is rather superficial. More about coming together to tidy and decorate the masjid rather than care for the vulnerable. Something which was unexpected. How did it change from the original context? We don’t know.

So the man finished his eid solat at 9.20am. He found us at the nearby spa seating area waiting for him. We took a walk back to the masjid for some family photos and experience the post eid culture. People dispersed very quickly after solat. There was no time wasting only efficiency. Some men were giving away free fried bread which was eaten dipped in granulated sugar, just like that. We found a butcher shop just outside the masjid and bought fresh mutton which I made yakhni for biryani for eid dinner.
